So you've got an .srt subtitle file — maybe from JAVSubs or another tool — and you want to watch your video with subtitles. Here's how to do it in the most popular video players.

The Easy Way: Same Name, Same Folder

Most video players will automatically load subtitles if the .srt file has the same name as the video and sits in the same folder. For example:

Put them together, open the video, and subtitles should appear automatically. This works in VLC, MPV, MPC-HC, and most other players.

VLC Media Player

VLC is the most popular free video player and handles .srt files effortlessly.

  1. Open your video in VLC
  2. Go to Subtitle → Add Subtitle File...
  3. Select your .srt file
  4. Done — subtitles appear immediately

You can also just drag and drop the .srt file onto the VLC window while the video is playing.

MPC-HC / MPC-BE

MPC-HC (Media Player Classic) is a lightweight Windows player that's great for subtitles.

  1. Open your video in MPC-HC
  2. Go to File → Load Subtitle...
  3. Select your .srt file

Or just use the auto-detect method — same filename, same folder.

MPV

MPV is a powerful, minimalist player popular with power users.

MPV automatically loads subtitles if they share the same name as the video. You can also:

PotPlayer

PotPlayer is another popular Windows player with excellent subtitle support.

  1. Open your video
  2. Right-click → Subtitles → Load Subtitle
  3. Select your .srt file

Troubleshooting

If subtitles aren't showing up:

That's It

SRT is the most widely supported subtitle format. Every major video player handles it natively — no plugins, no conversion needed. Just put the .srt next to your video and hit play.
